The STEEL IT Vinyl Coating System provides a comprehensive solution to steel protection, the STEEL IT Vinyl System uses a unique 316L stainless steel leafing pigment that protects surfaces from fresh and salt water immersion, and provides resistance to strong chemical environments. A modified vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymer, STEEL IT Vinyl is available in white primer and in a USDA-approved stainless steel finish. Easily applied with spray techniques, it is well suited for marine, industrial, urban and rural environments. The system is so tough that four coats can provide many years of protection to submerged coating systems on steel.

STEEL IT Vinyl can be used in a variety of applications in tanks, ships and locks, as well as for food, chemical and drug processing. An 8 dry mil thick layer of multiple coats over well sandblasted, primed steel provides excellent resistance to chemical fumes and spillage in severe environments. For marine immersion applications, a vinyl wash primer is required. Quick drying, the white primer can be recoated in three hours, and the stainless steel finish coat can be recoated in six hours. The stainless steel finish covers up to 272 sq. ft./gal. at a thickness of 1 dry mils.

Surface Preparation:
  • General use - sandblast from commercial (SSPC-SP-6) to near white (SSPC-SP-10) levels
  • For immersion or exposure to chemicals - sandblast to full white (SSPC-SP-5)
  • Anchor pattern cut and angular - 1.5 - 2.0 mils deep
Film Thickness:
  • Normal use - 6 dry mils (4 coats)
  • Severe use - 8 dry mils (above the peaks of the anchor pattern)
Application:
  • Conventional spray techniques - use a DeVilbiss MBC or JGA spray gun with a 705 Air Cap and a FF Fluid Tip.
  • Airless spraying - use a DeVilbiss JGB-501 airless gun combination with a Fluid Tip Orifice between 0.009" and 0.018".
Drying Time:
  • Dry to the touch in 30 min.
  • Recoat white #6912 in 3 hrs., STEEL IT #6905 in 6 hrs
Coverage:
  • White primer #6912: theoretical coverage - 240 sq. ft./gal. at 1 dry mil.
  • Stainless Steel #6905: theoretical coverage - 272 sq. ft./gal. at 1 dry mil.
Thinning and Clean Up:
  • Thinning not recommended - only when mandatory
  • Airless spray may require small amounts of MIBK
  • Brush application can use MIAK or glycol ether acetates
  • Clean up with ketones or ektone/aromatic mixtures
Limitations:
  • Apply only when surface and ambient temperatures are above 40 deg. F
  • Relative humidity must be less than 86%
  • Surface temperature must be at least 5 deg. above dew point
